Important documents including your passport, visa and plane tickets should be the first in your list. Of course, you would not make it to your destination without them. Get multiple bag packs depending on your requirements. Prescription drugs, additional glasses and contact lenses, if you use any must be packed without fail.
2. Clothing:
Do a bit of research on the host country to find out special clothing requirements. Here are a list of clothing that you can consider packing: jeans, skirts, sweaters, hoodies, T-shirts, pajamas, socks, swimsuit, workout clothes, coat or jacket, outfits for special occasions, walking shoes, flip flops, hat, gloves and scarves.
3. Electronics:
If you are a proud owner of a laptop or a camera, there is no way that you would be going study abroad without them. Dont forget the chargers, memory cards, adapters and headphones too. As your cell phone may not work abroad, you may need to have a word with your program coordinator to help you get a cheap cell phone at the host country.
4. Toiletries:
Hair brush, comb, toothbrush, deodorant, razors, hand sanitizer, shampoo, conditioner, nail clippers, makeup and sunblock are a few toiletries that you may want to pack. There are restrictions on amount of liquids that you can bring on plane. Hence, dont pack too much of these to avoid shopping abroad. You should even consider buying a few travel size toiletries which would last you a couple of weeks.
5. Money and Cards:
Make sure that you have some money with you in the local currency of your host nation and international credit cards if you have one. You must inform the bank or the credit card company well in advance that you are going abroad. This will help them make arrangements for you to get an international credit card. Carry your ATM card with you and make sure that you are aware of the international fees charged by your bank and the ATM.
6. Miscellaneous:
There are things that you may have been accustomed to using or you think you would need when you are away from home. Travel books, watch, sunglasses, personal journal, towels, linens, bed sheets, sleeping bags, etc. are some of them. Your belongings should fit in a couple of normal size suitcases and a carry-on. Do not overlook the possibility of your luggage getting lost. Your money, important documents, medications, a change of clothing and the most essential travel size toiletries should be in your carry-on. Pack light to make it easier to get around.
